June 2022

The first half of 2022 has been an incredible year here at Mystery Room Mastering. There’s already been too many projects to cram into a blog post but one highlight was remastering “Funky Divas” by En Vogue, a truly legendary album. The 21 song Expanded Edition via RHINO Records can be found on your streaming service of choice.

G. Love (of G. Love and Special Sauce) has a new album coming out this week called “Philadelphia Mississippi” that was mastered here. It was produced by Luther Dickinson (of North Mississippi Allstars) and features collaborations with Christone “KingFish“ Ingram, Jontavious Willis and legends like Alvin YoungBlood Hart and RL Boyce as well as HipHop legends Schoolly D, Speech and Freddie Foxx. You can order in HERE and stream it anywhere starting June 24th.

One of my all-time favorite bands The Figgs had their newest album “Chemical Shake” mastered here. You can grab it on CD and eventually on vinyl HERE.

Last year the 100 song Deluxe Version of “Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash” from The Replacements that was mastered here came out on streaming and a 4 CD/1 LP box set via RHINO Records. One of those CDs contained an epic early live show from January 23, 1981 at the 7th St Entry in Minneapolis, MN. The live show was released on 2xLP vinyl for Records Store Day 2022 and there might be some copies floating around yet. The lacquers were cut by Jeff Powell in Memphis and it sounds GREAT on vinyl.

Night Crickets are a new group featuring David J of Bauhaus/Love And Rockets, Victor DeLorenzo who was the founding drummer for Violent Femmes, and multi-instrumentalist Darwin Meiners who also mixed the album. Their debut album was mastered here and available now on CD vinyl Omnivore Recordings, and the vinyl version will be released July 29th. You can order/pre-order HERE.

I recently remastered the epic self-titled by Asia from 1982. It will eventually be out on streaming and a new vinyl pressing via Universal Music Group.

Screeching Weasel have a new album coming out this summer that was produced by Mike Kennerty of All-American Rejects and mastered here. You can pre-order the CD and vinyl HERE, and one song is currently streaming on your streaming service of choice.

There’s another new Mr. T Experience reissue coming out this year via Sounds Rad and you can call dibs on a copy HERE. Sounds Rad has been doing an amazing job on the packaging of all these recent Mr. T Experience reissues and aside from Shards Vol. 1 & 2 (mastered elsewhere), they’ve all been fully remastered here from the original tapes and sources for the absolute best results. Kudos to Dr. Frank for hunting down all the tapes and to Christopher at Sounds Rad for doing these reissues right.

The best way to keep up on recent projects, studio upgrades, and other photos/details is over on my Instagram and/or Twitter feeds.

Speaking of studio upgrades, I recently purchased a pair of PMC 8-2 speakers but I’m still waiting for the stands to arrive so the official upgrade will likely happen in a few weeks or later this summer.

In the meantime, I’ve also added a Trinnov ST2 Pro which has taken the already great PSI mains and subs to another level in my room.

Speaking of next level, I’ve also added some Audeze LCD-5 headphones to both my main room and also my mobile rig, pictured HERE. While mastering on headphones can be controversial, I’ve been having GREAT luck using the Audeze LCD-5 headphones as my only means of monitoring in certain situations and they are nothing short of amazing and a pleasure to work with/on.

I’ll be giving a presentation at the first ever independent mastering conference happening July 7-8, 2022 in Portland, Oregon. You can get tickets and learn more HERE.

Lastly, I’m still doing (mostly) monthly livestreams for Steinberg to help both new and existing WaveLab users understand the software better. You can watch all the livestreams and download some additional resources (settings, presets, etc.) via the WaveLabHelp.com website.
